What is plant-based leather or bioleather?

Plantleather or plant-based "leather" is a sustainable leather alternative made from bio based or plant-based materials. Plantleathers are materials made from plants and fruits such as cactus, apples, pineapples, grapes, mangoes and mushrooms.

What is the environmental and social cost of real leather vs. plantleather?

The leather industry has a very damaging impact on both the environment and the people who work in the industry. Not only is there the question of animal cruelty, but there is a massive environmental and human cost in producing real leather.

Even if the hides are by-products from the meat industry and not killed directly for their skins, the tanning process is arguably the most damaging part of the leather production process. Leather hides are dyed using chrome dyes and toxic chemicals. The chemicals are then released into nearby rivers and land and are highly polluting and toxic to anyone who comes into contact with them.

Plant-based leathers are less damaging to the environment as they are produced from either waste materials or using more ecologically friendly production methods. We use plant-based bio leather from certified suppliers, they are working to improve the social and environmental impacts of leather.

In conclusion, there is no perfect solution but there are better ways of producing leather goods- we believe that plant-leathers are the future!
